Oracle Build an App Event

Oracle Build an App Event

A group of Year 9 students visited Oracle, the IT company, to attend their Build an App Day with Bulmershe School and UTC. One of our teams was delighted to be the winners of the competition!

The sun was shining as we arrived at their stunning offices in beautiful surroundings near the Thames.  The students heard about the company, and what it is like to work for such a large organisation and heard the career stories of some of the staff that work there.

For the main activity of the day the students worked in teams with staff from Oracle to assist and guide them.  They were shown how to build an app using Oracle’s software and were then challenged to think of a new app!  Teams had to video a presentation to explain their idea to the judges.  After lunch, they had a talk from Bill Thompson, a BBC journalist about how to present their idea well.

Twelve teams took part, including two from Reading Girls’ School, and our Exalogic team were delighted to be declared the winners, with their app Parent Pal - “as you are always your child’s best friend”.

We are very grateful to Oracle for hosting such an excellent day, with inspirational speaks and a challenging competition.  Their generosity is much appreciated.
