Junior Maths Challenge
Reading Girls were featured in the Reading Chronicle on Thursday 7 June 2012 to honour their achievement in the Nationl Junior Maths Challenge. The girls will also be honoured at Junior Prizegiving in July
The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust at Leeds University organise this competition for Y7 and 8 students throughout the UK. Schools enter their top Mathematicians, so our students were competing against the best in the country. It takes the form of a 1 hour paper with puzzle type questions. Students are only allowed paper and a pencil as brain power is the most important tool. The top 40% of the students are awarded a certificate – those receiving a gold certificate will be in the top 7%. The competition allows students to think through problems in a logical way applying Maths skills that they have learnt in the classroom.
The competition is open to all schools in the UK. They do have different ones for other year groups along with a team challenge. We are running a team challenge event in our school on Tuesday 3 July using the UKMT resources for Y5 students from our feeder schools.
