Reading Girls' School

Dear Parents/carers

Academisation of Reading Girls’ School

Thank you if you were able to come to the information evening held on Tuesday 23rd May, where Reading Girls' School's Chair of Governors, Peter Kayes, and the Executive Headteacher of Baylis Court Trust, Deborah Ajose, spoke about the conversion of RGS to an Academy.

I thought it would be helpful to summarise them ain issues that arose.

Following the inspection in December 2015, where Reading Girls' School was placed in special measures, we were told that we would be converted into an Academy. The process has been a slow one, but we are now finally at the point where we can give details of how this "academisation" will work and what it will mean for RGS.

RGS will become an Academy on 1st September, as part of the Baylis Court Trust. Baylis Court Scool, the hub of the Trust, is an outstanding girls' school in Slough. The Trust also current includes an infants' school in Slough. If you would like to know more about the Trust, please visit its website: Please also see the slideshow Ms Ajose presented on Tuesday evening below.

RGS will remain a girls' school, it willkeep its name and its uniform, and there are no immediate plans to make significant changes to the way the school runs. Any changes that are brought in will be done so after consultation with students and parents.

The Trust has appointed a Principal, Mr Jon Gargan, who will start on 1st September. My last day will be Wednesday 19 July.

I would like to thank parents and carers for your support during the year that I have held the interim position of Headteacher. The staff have been working incredibly hard since I arrived as we brought in improvements to the quality of education your daughters receive, and I am proud to say that RGS is now set fair to continue this journey of improvement over the coming months and years. RGS is a very special school that has enormous potential, and I anticipate seeing this excellent being recognised by Ofsted very soon.

Many thanks once again for your support. If you have any questions about the conversion of the school to an Academy, please drop me a line at

Yours sincerely

Leo Gilbert

Interim Headteacher
